I catch hell and get crazy looks when I tell my male friends that I’m on Pinterest.
Here’s a recent snide remark…
“You’re kiddin’, right!? That’s where girls post about manicures and weddings!”
Yep, there’s lots of estrogen induced pinning going on. But, guys, I’ve found Pinterest to be a great tool for preparedness and self-reliance.

There are lots of manly Pins that will stoke the fire of preparedness and self-reliance for anyone interested. In fact, it’s quite likely that your favorite prepared blogger has an active board full of value-adding pins. Whatever you’re into – prepping, survival, self-sufficiency, homesteading, DiY, bushcrafting, pioneer skills, guns, hunting/fishing, tools, permaculture, fitness – you’ll find it on Pinterest.
One cool thing about this social media tool is that your pins don’t disappear into the ether like Facebook or Twitter. What you pin on your board(s) stays there for future reference. My Pinterest boards serve as my Doing the Stuff refrigerator where I pin “fridge worthy” stuff I’m working on.
One preparedness project I found and finished yesterday is the self-feeding battery storage unit below. I was dressed for a hunting trip and my truck wouldn’t start. So I salvaged the day by heading to my shop to build preparedness stuff!
Power at your finger tips
From left to right are the most common batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V batteries are ready for use and in one place. You can find the plans on my DIY Preparedness Project Board. I modified my battery storage unit by making it 21 inches tall instead of the original 8 inches to accommodate a Prepper load of batteries.
It beats my old scattered drawer storage method. There are 23 AA batteries in the slot with room for at least a dozen more.
When DRG or I need a battery, we can easily pull one from the self-feeding rack.

I have always looked a Pintrest the same as FaceBook or Twitter, a huge OPSEC problem (stolen passwords, identity etc) I would be interested in your thoughts on this.

Don’t put stuff on there you wouldn’t want stolen, and use a unique password.

Wow, Tex. That’s a very personal one for me and can’t be applied everyone. As you may remember in my Funk of Anonymity post in Sept. of 2012, I officially came out of the ‘prepper’ closet. For me, it was a decision to try and get out of the funk and spread the word of preparedness, self-reliance, and liberty to more folks. I don’t really know if it’s working that well or not. But that’s not the important point here.
If we do any thing online, or use our cell phones, or email our distant aunt in Oregon, we’ve breached OPSEC. The NSA has the ability to spy on us even when we’re not online or using electronic devices… dirty bastards!
With that being said, I’m out there. I made that choice carefully and logically. It is an individual choice each of us has to make. I got tired of hiding, or trying to hide my online activities from our FED’s prying eyes. Nothing diabolical or evil. Just trying to be ready for what’s coming. And enjoy the journey as much as possible while spreading the word.

As far as others, not the spooks or drone operators, I’m careful about sharing info. The close folks know our plans and details. They’re a part of the working plan. Don’t disclose this stuff with y’all or others in our lives.
Ultimately, it’s a personal choice. You’ve got me thinking I need to do a little more justice to this topic – a later post. I know I haven’t answered or addressed your request fully. But thanks for spinning my wheels, Tex!

I agree, pinterest has what ever it is that your into. I like that it spreads good ideas too, and gets people motivated that might not have done it on there own.

I need one of those battery holders! That’s a great idea. I don’t know how often I have dug through the “junk drawer” for battery, finding I don’t have enough of the size I’m looking for. With that system, a glance would let me know the state of my battery stores.

I like the fact that you can see exactly what you’ve got stored, Caroline. Of course, you can make it any size you’d like. It was finally time to clean our junk drawer and this little project helped. 🙂

I just keep all my batteries in a plastic bucket labeled “Batteries”. I keep them in the value packs so it is easy to find the right size.

What you see depends on who you are following. If you are seeing content you don’t want to then unfollow those boards and follow boards of interest to you. You might also try following some camping sites (Camping Survival is one) for some great ideas as well.

Pinterest rocks the house as an unlimited source of ideas and information. I have a group of older gentleman that I chat with on FB – they love the project ideas I share (90% come from Pint)…but when I suggest they go sign up for the service, I get the “I’m not signing up for that woman site!” line from them. They have no idea what they’re missing…

Here’s my problem with pinterest.
Every time I see all the pictures these women post about grilling recipes, I can’t think about anything else except food. Lol. Seriously, I don’t care what anybody says. Pinterest has some of the coolest ideas I’ve seen period.
A wealth of knowledge.
